REST OF SERIES FORTHCOMING

Eagle was created by Marcus Morris, a Anglian vicar from Lancashire as a comic for boys. From the very first issue launched on 14th April 1950, Archibald Berkeley-Willoughby was there on Page 3, straight after the two page full-colour Dan Dare featured story. Eagle comic was issued weekly on a Friday.

The Adventures of P.C.49 was a one-page black-and-white strip with stories generally lasting around 13 weeks although some were as short as eight parts and others as long as 26 parts.

As per the radio series the stories were written by Alan Stranks, although they were original stories created for the comic rather than adaptations of the radio scripts (with the exception of The Case of the Looted Lorries, which reused the plot of the Series 2 radio episode and first film The Case of the Guardian Angel).

The first P.C49 comic serial was untitled and ran for thirteen weeks. The sketches for the storyboard were drawn by Strom Gould and were a bit lacklustre. Gould also drew the images for the next three stories up to and including The Case of the Killer’s Keep. From the fifth story, The Case of the Terrible Twins, which introduced Pat & Mick Mullgan of The Boys' Club, the drawings were by former Navy war-artist John Worsley and were much more realistic.

Joan Carr, P.C.49’s girlfriend, was dropped from the comics after the second story even though she continued in the radio series (she did crop up in the first Eagle Annual too). Joan was dropped so that Archie could spend more time with the comics' characters of young lads, called The Boys’ Club, whose alumni include such characters as Pat & Mick Mulligan (The Terrible Twins), Toby, Snorky and Giglamps. They increasingly became the focus of the stories, getting Archie in and out of trouble on numerous occasions as they helped and hindered his investigations. The Boys’ Club were created for the Eagle comic. and did not feature in the radio original. They were added as it was felt boys would pprefer to read stories with characters they could ore readily itentify with being in them.

The P.C.49 scrip in Eagle came to a close in March 1957 with the completion of his final story The Case of the T.V. Terror, by which time the radio series had been off the air for four years. The character was replaced with a new one from 22nd March 1957; Mark Question (The boy with a future - but no past!) which was also written by Alan Stranks, but drawn by Harry Lindfield. Eagle’s sister comic Swift ran a Dixon of Dock Green strip in the late fifties.

List of Eagle serials for P.C.49

As well as the P.C.49 Annual above the character also appeared in the Eagle's own Annual each year for the first 7 years, the period in which the character eappered in the weekly strip. These strips in the Annual were original stories not reprints of stories that had appeared during the year.

The P.C.49 strips in the Eagle Annuals are;

Eagle Annual 1 1951 - The Case of the Busy Bees

Eagle Annual 2 1952 - The Case of the Circus Comes To Town

Eagle Annual 3 1953 - The Case of the Star Pupil

Eagle Annual 4 1954 - The Case of the New Champ*
